Overview
Embark on an unforgettable journey that begins in the captivating city of Chania, nestled on the island of Crete. Renowned as one of Greece’s most picturesque cities, Chania serves as the gateway to Crete, the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse landscapes, Crete offers travellers an endless array of experiences.
Known as the cradle of European civilisation, Crete boasts a remarkable historical legacy and is a haven for archaeology enthusiasts. The island was once the heart of the great Minoan civilisation, whose awe-inspiring remnants stand among the most significant archaeological wonders of the Mediterranean.
Our journey unfolds through scenic vineyards, flourishing orchards, and ancient olive groves, eventually leading us to the majestic White Mountains. These rugged peaks, often capped with snow until early June, symbolise the essence of Crete—wild, untamed, and fiercely proud, much like the Cretans themselves.
As we traverse these landscapes, we encounter remote villages and tread along ancient shepherds’ paths, immersing ourselves in the authentic charm of Crete’s rural life. The panoramic views from the high plains offer breathtaking sights of the Libyan Sea, a tranquil contrast to the island’s dramatic terrain.
On the southern edge of the Omalos Plateau, we enter the Samaria National Park, a sanctuary established to preserve the unique flora and fauna of this remarkable region. The park is home to Europe’s longest gorge, the Samaria Gorge, as well as several smaller gorges, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. Here, you may even have the rare opportunity to spot the elusive Cretan wild goat, known as the Kri-Kri, which roams the secluded mountain slopes.
The highlight of our journey is an 18km hike through the Samaria Gorge, starting at Xyloskalo on the Omalos Plateau, 1,200 metres above sea level. The well-maintained trail descends through fragrant pine and cypress forests, unveiling the beauty of Crete’s endemic plant species, many of which can only be found within this gorge. As we walk, the air fills with the scent of wild herbs, which grow in abundance among the rocky cliffs, their aroma stirred by the slightest touch.
This journey promises a truly immersive experience, blending Crete’s natural wonders with its deep historical roots, making it a perfect adventure for those seeking to explore both the beauty and the soul of the island.
Hotels & Cuisine
When it comes to food, Greece is a true celebration of regional flavours much like its renowned wines. Expect to indulge in fresh vibrant salads with locally sourced vegetables, fragrant herbs and generous lashings of olive oil. Seafood lovers will be spoiled for choice with the day’s catch transformed into delicious dishes bursting with the taste of the Mediterranean. Lamb, the nation’s favourite meat, features prominently in many traditional meals slow-cooked to perfection.
And of course, no Greek experience would be complete without embracing the local coffee culture. The streets are dotted with quaint footpath cafes where the air is filled with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It’s the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy a pastry or sweet treat – because the Greeks have an undeniable passion for their desserts too.
