La Dolce Vita

Highlights

Overview

Discover the sun-drenched island of Sicily, a treasure trove of cultural riches shaped by two millennia of Mediterranean rulers. From ancient Greek temples to majestic cathedrals adorned with Arabic-Norman architecture, Sicily offers a unique blend of history and beauty at every turn.

Our adventure begins with scenic walks through the stunning Riserva dello Zingaro, Sicily’s first nature reserve. This pristine coastal sanctuary, flanked by steep mountains, is a haven of biodiversity. As we explore, we’ll uncover secluded, picture-perfect beaches, immersing ourselves in the serenity of this protected ecosystem.

Venturing inland, the rugged Madonie Mountains reveal Sicily’s rustic charm, with traditional mountain villages, working farms, and local shepherds crafting fresh cheeses.

The coastal town of Cefalù provides a breathtaking view over the turquoise sea, with its inviting sandy beaches. From here, we set sail for the Aeolian Islands, an archipelago rising dramatically from the sea just north of Sicily. Named after Aeolus, the Greek god of winds, these islands offer spectacular walks and panoramic views over the surrounding seas and islands.

In Siracusa, we delve into 2,600 years of history as we explore Ortygia, the ancient heart of the city, set on a small island. Wander its narrow streets, lined with Doric temples and a stunning array of Greek, Roman, and Christian ruins.

No journey to Sicily is complete without a visit to Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano. Accompanied by a local guide, we trek to heights of over 2,000 metres, discovering the captivating landscapes shaped by this powerful mountain.

Our final days take us through the awe-inspiring Pantalica Gorge, home to Sicily’s greatest necropolis. Along this scenic trail, we encounter thousands of Neolithic tombs carved into the canyon walls, offering a glimpse into Sicily’s ancient past.

Before reaching Palermo, we visit Piazza Armerina and the grand Villa Romana del Casale, a sprawling Roman estate dating back to the 3rd century. The villa’s breathtaking mosaics, particularly from the Roman-African period, are remarkably preserved and offer a stunning window into the life and art of this ancient era.

This journey through Sicily promises an unforgettable blend of natural wonders, deep-rooted traditions, and historical marvels.
