Overview
Our adventure commences in the World Heritage-listed city of Dubrovnik, renowned for its historic charm and stunning coastal scenery. From there, we travel to the picturesque island of Mljet where we embark on a scenic hike along the island’s sun-drenched, rugged coastline. Mljet is almost entirely designated as a National Park showcasing Croatia’s breathtaking natural beauty.
Enveloped by the azure waters of the Adriatic, Croatia offers a diverse array of landscapes. While its indented coastline and enchanting islands are widely celebrated, the country also features extensive mountainous terrain with over 40% of its landmass comprised of rugged peaks and verdant forests.
Our journey continues to Paklenica National Park where we traverse deep canyons, beech forests, and spring-fed streams all leading to the stunning Adriatic coastline. The park’s varied landscapes provide a dramatic backdrop for exploration.
We then delve into the ethereal beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, we marvel at the aqua-hued lakes, cascading waterfalls, and lush woodlands. The park’s 16 terraced lakes interconnected by an intricate network of waterfalls and mineral-rich deposits create a misty and captivating natural wonderland.
Following a rejuvenating stay in the renowned spa town of Opatija, we cross into Slovenia where the majestic Julian Alps dominate the landscape. Despite its modest size—only half the size of Switzerland with fewer than 2 million residents—Slovenia is a treasure trove of spiritual traditions, ancient mountain villages, and unspoiled Renaissance towns.
In Slovenia’s charming capital Ljubljana, we experience a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere often likened to a smaller, less crowded Prague. The city’s youthful energy, bolstered by its 56,000 students, infuses it with a dynamic spirit. Our Slovenian explorations lead us through vineyard-clad hills, forested trails, and frescoed monasteries. We also ascend into the alpine terrain of Triglav National Park discovering secluded valleys and idyllic villages that have largely vanished from Western Europe.
Our journey culminates in the enchanting city of Venice, renowned for its romantic allure and timeless beauty.
Hotels & Cuisine
Our journey features stunning seaside accommodations on the island of Mljet and in Starigrad. In Croatia we stay at a luxurious 4-star hotel in Opatija where you’ll experience imperial charm and benefit from an in-house spa centre. Meanwhile in Slovenia our contemporary hotel in the quaint village of Ribčev Laz boasts a large indoor pool and is conveniently located close to the serene Lake Bohinj.
Croatian cuisine reflects a blend of Central European and Mediterranean influences. On the coast you’ll taste vibrant Mediterranean flavours with a focus on fresh fish and seafood. The diverse landscape from plains to mountains produces superb vegetables and fruits while local red and white wines are improving in quality.
Slovenian cuisine given its diverse influences offers a delightful variety. You’ll enjoy Austrian sausages and strudel Italian-style ravioli and dumplings as well as Hungarian goulash and palacinke (pancakes with a range of fillings). Slovenia’s winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times promises some delightful surprises.
