Walking Tour in France, Aix-En-Provence, Forcalquier and Cassis

Jean de Florette and Manon de Source, My Mother's Castle and My Father's Glory - who has not heard of these wonderful books and films of Marcel Pagnol!

From our hometown, Forcalquier, we shall take you to the places which influenced Marcel Pagnol in his writing.

During your time with us you will get to know many of Provence's special tastes and smells. Most of the regions have remained unspoilt and the villages have preserved their local identity and spirit.

Inspired by Julian More's book - Pagnol's Provence - we show you some of the famous film locations.

In Haute Provence with Montagne de Lure, Contadour and Ganagobie, we recognize scenes out of "Regain" and "The Baker's wife." Join us for the rare opportunity to experience daily life in Provence at the pace of the local inhabitants.

We shall walk in the L'Etoile Range and Cassis. We also travel through the tiny village of La Treille where much of the film Jean de Florette was shot.

In Forcalquier we stay on the outskirts of the village, in the countryside, in a hotel which Pagnol himself could have easily chosen; charming and so typical of the real Provence.

It is set in the countryside with a delightful garden, swimming pool and for the energetic, a tennis court.

Before dinner you can try your hand at boule while enjoying a glass of the local aperitif "pastis"! Afterwards we travel into the countryside to experience some delightful local restaurants offering real Provincial food.

The last two nights are spent in Cassis, a beautiful seaside port on the Mediterranean. Our hotel is only minutes away from the harbour in a very quiet location with a lovely garden setting complete with a pool and spa.

We dine out in the old town and experience fresh Mediterranean seafood both nights.

I really didn't know who Pagnol was but I was impressed with the countryside that was made famous through his films! 'gourmet' got me interested and I was not disappointed. I was shaken out of my sedentary life to connect with my body again - the muscles, the rhythms and the late night gastronomic delights. A truly wonderful 'holiday' in the true sense of the word. Based in one place, the beautiful Charembeau Hotel, with its beautiful gardens and character rooms, it was the best smelling place we have been in, impregnated with the aroma of lavender and honey. We loved the small group size and ate in charming small local restaurants which would not be accessible to a large group. The tour was was conducted at a relaxed pace and we visited many interesting and beautiful places. Travelling with Graeme was like having a friend showing you around, even to the extent of being taken to his wonderful character home. The bus/van was more than adequate for our small group. Cooking schools were held in a charming provincial kitchen and we learned many different and interesting techniques and recipes. Eating on the terrace, the meal we had cooked, was most enjoyable. Our experience with Gabriella was fabulous. The weather was mostly kind and we saw so many wonderful places and shared experiences that highlighted the gourmet delights of Provence. Auberge Charembeau accommodation was well located and the service was excellent. Lovely patio setting for breakfast each day. The highlight of this tour for me was the day spent cooking culinary delights at "l'Oustaou d'Oulivin" with Joyce Borgmann. I was also delighted at the unexpected exposure to art at the lavender and olive museums. The mini bus transport was very comfortable and encouraged little naps to help recover from the cuisine and wine tasting events. I can't speak highly enought of Gabriella and the effort she made to ensure that our group experienced as much as possible in this brief but superb tour.
